Pile spacing & system planning

Correct planning of the stake spacing is crucial for a stable, long-lasting trellis system. It influences the load-bearing capacity of the wire system, the wind resistance and the long-term functionality of your vineyard stakes.

Post spacing in standard and wind-exposed locations:

  • Standard locations: install posts at intervals of approximately 4–6 m, depending on the profile type and soil conditions.
  • Wind-exposed or particularly open locations: reduce the spacing between posts or increase the material thickness to prevent excessive wire deflection and damage caused by wind loads.

Material thickness in relation to load:

  • Thinner posts are suitable for lighter trellis systems and sheltered locations.
  • More heavily loaded installations – for example in wind-exposed vineyards or where mechanical cultivation is used – require post profiles with a greater material thickness.

Recommendations for different trellis systems:

  • Standard trellis systems: conventional post spacing is generally sufficient.
  • Intensive cultivation systems or special training systems (e.g. reverse training systems): use closer post spacing or reinforced posts.
  • End and corner posts: provide additional bracing using ground anchors, base plates or concrete to ensure secure stability.

Careful post planning helps ensure that your vineyard remains stable, reliably withstands wind loads and can be used for many years with minimal maintenance.
